ColdFusion Meetup

Today I attended my first ColdFusion Meetup. I've been watching and/or listening to the previous meetups now and then, but today I clicked through and there was one in progress so I jumped in. What a neat system this is. If you are a ColdFusion user and want to learn more about the CF world in general, it is obvious this is a good thing to be part of.

The whole platform takes a bit of reckoning - the Adobe Connect viewer seems to handle itself once installed, but there's some stuff happening on the screen once you log in... you've got somebody's video - whoever is in control at the moment - showing a live screencast,  the voice of the host and/or current speaker as the audio channel, and a scrolling chat window with all sorts of things including notes from the presenters, questions from the audience, and various interjections.

Connecting live and having my own typed questions answered on the realtime voice track was fun... though listening to the recordings can be educational and thought-provoking, being there 'with' all the other CF-folks in realtime is definitely the way to go... I plan to be back at more CF meetups soon!

The CF Meetup site is here: http://www.meetup.com/coldfusionmeetup/

The one I participated in today, "Leveraging Eclipse for ColdFusion Development", with Mike Henke", is here: http://www.meetup.com/coldfusionmeetup/calendar/10900365/

( Thanks to the host Charlie Arehart and to Mike for the info about CFeclipse - I learned several useful things today and look forward to what's coming next! )

Thanks for attending. Be sure to watch the Mylyn connect presentation, it is very, very good. http://live.eclipse.org/node/412

Hi Mike,
thanks for the link. I was impressed by what I saw of mylyn today (also thanks for the spelling which I didn't quite catch in spoken word format!)

Yup, I'm a big fan of Connect as well.

Thanks for the mention and the kind regards, Michael (and others). Happy to do it. Hey, if you'd like to give a talk any time, you'd certainly be welcome (as is anyone reading this). I just looked through your past blog entries. How about doing a preso based on your CommunityMX tutorial? or your gallery tools (not just them but how you built them, or anything like that)?

It's just as easy to present as you found it to attend. :-)

Thanks Charlie - that sounds great. I'll spend some time watching recorded Meetups and get a feel for it - in the mean time, I did spot the list of potential topics on the Meetup site. Between that and what I've seen of recorded session titles, it appears to be more geared to serious CF-code-heads than the 'average' CF user... maybe I can fill that gap with some lighter presos? Or, would the actual attendees just be bored with stuff about dynamic forms, jQuery, and simple CF widgets or functions?

Hey Michael, sorry I missed this when you wrote in July.

Certainly it would be fine (indeed great) to have you (or anyone) present talks more suited to beginners. I welcome talks at any level. Indeed, I try to communicate that whenever possible, including the emailed meeting announcements and also when I start the meetings (though I wasn't saying that and other announcements on the recording, which I have changed recently).

Any of those ideas would be great, sure. Thanks. Just drop me a note or find more at speak.coldfusionmeetup.com.

Thanks, Charlie - I've been trying to drop in on meetups when time allows, like everybody else just so darn busy... but i would love to take you up on the offer, will look for an opportunity to do so!
